Jose´s Obituary


We profoundly mourn the loss of BALAS Fellow Professor Jose De la Torre. The BALAS community is saddened by this great loss. Dr. De La Torre was a friend, a colleague, and a true legend of a scholar. His numerous accomplishments during his lifetime were  outstanding in the International Business arena, and in his pursuit of bridging Global Academia with Latin America.

Born in Havana Cuba, Jose came to the USA as a young man. He received his doctorate from the Harvard Business School in 1970, and previously graduated in aerospace engineering and business administration from the Pennsylvania State University.

Among his most prominent roles he was was the Founding Dean of the Chapman Graduate School of Business at FIU, President of the Academy of International Business (AIB) and the European Internatinal Business Association (EIBA). He was faculty member at UCLA Anderson School of Management, INSEAD, Harvard Business School, and Georgia State University. His life as a scholar took him to different parts of the world and in the most recent years he collaborated with the Bologna Business School, in Italy, and Georgetown University.

He was also the co-founder and Chair of the EMBA Consortium for Global Business Innovation, a collaborative venture of eleven business schools spread around the world. 

Professor de la Torre authored over 65 books and articles and more than 30 case studies in the field of international business and strategy and served in Editorial Boards of several academic journals.  His service to the profession and academia was recognized becoming a Fellow of AIB, the Strategic Management Society, the International Academy of Management and BALAS.

José was a big contributor to the BALAS Community promoting Latin American scholarship and bringing it to the international academic arena. He was an outstanding scholar and a kind, loving, lively person that tocuhed many lives that were inspired by his energy and love. We will miss you Jose!

May his soul rest in peace. We extend our most sincere condolences to his family and friends. Jose De La Torre will always have a special place in the heart of the BALAS community.
